I got into running last year and my wife saw how consistent I am and often appreciates me for being consistent and support me so much. Recently she saw me watching too many cycling videos like I did with running when I was pushing myself to start running.

She asked me many questions like what are you watching, what would you buy, why do you want to buy road bike over other etc. and may have thought it would be a good gift if she could buy me one from FB Market place.

And that’s how we ended up with this bike. I liked it . No doubt. I would’ve not chosen one myself that’s that good looking. But then looking good is one thing and being good is another. Hence the question.

Bike specs as mentioned by seller:

2019 Look 765 Optimum – 53 cms (Fits well to me. I am 5 feet 8 Inches). Brought at 1500 CAD.

Full Carbon

Full Shimano 105 – 11 Speed

700 x 28mm

Shimano Dual Pedals (Clip one side and flat on the other)

Full disclosure: I never rode a bike with gears so this is my first time. I did used single speed bike in my teens. So I registered with local bike club for beginner group rides and also attending some bike workshops to get an intro to repair, how to fix flat tire or changing a tire, how to fix stuck chains etc.

Thank you.

  1. She did just fine. It’s a really nice bike with good components for a reasonable price. Enjoy.

What does it matter? It’s yours now.

People are going to tell you that you spent too much, but they don’t know the realities of the market in Toronto (or are American and will equate CAD to USD.) $1,500 is average to good for a carbon bike from a reputable brand with 11-speed 105 of that age and in that condition in the GTA.

It would be overpriced if you lived somewhere else.

  3. I don’t think you got a crazy deal, but I don’t think you overpaid either. Solid bike, looks well maintained.

Look frames are really nice. I would expect slightly nicer components for the price and age, but it will ride like a dream and it’s a great platform for building a truly awesome bike

  5. Looks (HA) like she found someone selling a practically brand new bike. Look makes really good bikes, and that’s way more bike than you’d get for the same money if buying new. Good deal

Honestly, probably a little expensive for 105 with rim brakes. But it looks to be in great condition and Look bikes are sexy as hell so it’s definitely not worth fighting over.

  7. Look is unique brand in the sense they hand make all their bikes and forks. Look up their manufacturing process. They make their own carbon weaves even. That is a very nice bike and in my opinion not overpriced. She did well

  8. Personally I think its quite a good deal. The price is right what you expect it to be for that setup and Look are often cited as possibly being (one of) the very best frame manufacturers, they generally come with a premium and there usually aren’t a lot on the used market. I for sure would have bought it for that price if it was my size.

  9. That was an insanely nice bike when it was new, but it’s definitely a bit outdated in ways that can’t be upgraded. Can’t put thru-axles or disc brakes on it, for example, which limits the ability to upgrade the wheels or drivetrain. For a first road bike, it’s a great find and you’re going to love riding it.

  10. I think you overpaid slightly even in Canadian dollars but that bike also looks mint, like the person before who owned it took good care of it and probably replaced components before they got clapped out.

If you ride it and enjoy it then don’t think too much about how much you paid for it. Also take this as a good lesson to ask about bike prices and negotiate for when you inevitably fall in love with cycling and are looking for your next bike. Welcome to the club.

  11. Cherish that bike. If you ride it very often, it’s way more value per dollar than if it was a steal of a deal that you barely ride.

My first road bike was a similar spec (but not a carbon frame). My mother helped me pay for it. I regret selling it so much. The sentimental value is priceless.

  12. Imagine you’re selling something on FB marketplace and someone buys your item, and then contacts you a few days later saying “Hey I paid too much for this?” You’d laugh them out of the room. What is the end game with asking us this same question? Are you not going to enjoy riding the bike?

Beautiful frame. Look used to manufacture all their frames in house, no farm out. I’m not sure if that’s still the case. Anyway, looks good, enjoy

You won at life OP. A wife that cares about you so much. Can’t place any value on that. Go make her proud

Look frames are the best manufactured frames made. There’s nothing even remotely close to their standards. This will last your wife a long time and it looks [no pun intended] in amazing condition.

OP stated, “700 x 28mm” for the tires.

If I’m searching the Internet right, it has clearance for wider tires (34mm?) and OP could put 32mm tires on for greater comfort/suspension?

A lot of older road bikes lock you down to puny tire sizes because of clearance issues, but it looks like this has greater flexibility?

Yes, it’s a fine bike. If you’re worried about maintenance, check the chain, tires, and brake shoes for wear. Those are all parts that wear out with normal use.

Ride it like you stole it, umm, I mean, ride it like your loving wife gave it to you. This video might help you figure out the gears.

  18. The truth? yeah, that’s about $500 Canadian there. But does she like it? Don’t say a fucking word other than “nice bike :)”

Those specs are solid. 105 groupset is very nice, you are set. She did you well.

  20. Looks a lot like my 2011 Trek Madone, I love it, it’s got almost 10k miles on it from just me. Hell, the lady I bought it from in 2021 still gives me kudos on my strava rides! 😂

  21. A teeny bit overpaid but it’ll be worth it for all the good times you’ll have on the bike!!!!

  22. nothing to do with cycling, but double checking your wife and questioning gifts is a really bad idea.
