That was a real nice helmet. Emphasis on was. Now it’s just a nice reminder.

  2. Glad you’re okay!

26 years ago I did something very similar: no cars, over the handle bars, broken ribs, clavicle, scapula, punctured lung; was NOT knocked out.

Giro. That’s what I buy my kids.

Here’s a link to Virginia Tech’s helmet rating program, really important work they’re doing:

  3. Helmet did it’s job. If you weren’t wearing this helmet, the crack could’ve been on your skull. Check the manufacturer, they may have a helmet replacement policy.

Glad you’re posting through it, OP. Swift recovery to you.

I did the same in 2020, was riding at night and my tire got caught in a crack. Went over the handlebars, broken ribs and a broken helmet. No concussion. Helmet is hanging on the wall above my bikes in my garage as a thanks/reminder.

I hope you have a smooth recovery and can get back on soon.

Were you going downhill? I can’t imagine how else you would have rolled like that.

I was riding home yesterday when it started raining. I live in SF, so that means I’m going down hills with congested streets and anxious drivers. At one point someone tried to cut in front of me and make a last second right turn, forcing me to break suddenly. I slid on the surface and the tail of my bike whipped and I nearly lost it and would have slid into the side of their car had I not had plenty of experience with wet roads, body control, and selfish drivers before. But on a wet road there’s just no way to guarantee safety. When I got home I was researching new helmets and the effect that going from 25 mph to an immediate 0 has on the body…

  7. Wishing you a speedy recovery. That helmet seems to have saved you a lot of strife.

Before reading the caption, I thought this was one of those posts saying “do I need a new helmet?”. I was fully prepared to lambast you. You do need a new one, but I’m sure you know that.

    Good job helmet!

I might argue that multiple helmets are cooler than multiple bikes

Sorry to hear about your ribs and lung, but good thing you were wearing a helmet or you might not be able to post about it.

  10. I bought a $150 fox speedframe and a cheap $360 bike from Walmart. Made a post about it yesterday and everybody lost their collective shit I didn’t forgo the helmet and spend more on a used $600 bike.

I don’t care about peak performance, but I do care about protecting my head. Hope you make a quick and full recovery.

  11. BIN IMMEDIATELY

Even if the damage wasn’t as obvious as this I would be throwing it in the bin.

  12. Glad you’re “ok”, how’s the bike?

I had a similar accident, got a crash replacement on my helmet (looks like Kask has one, worth looking into). The store I swapped mine out for kept my old one and put it on one of their mannequins… a pretty harsh reminder when I go back in there (but it was cracked pretty badly).
