I have an old derailleur with a lower sitting gear hanger thingy & I would like to replace with the other. I am never entirely sure lower/older style is just outdated or serves a purpose, i.e. chain line? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes that’s compatible
9 speeds have the same pull ratio as 7 and 8. You are good with the newer RD.
