    Quelle 88e édition de Gand-Wevelgem (désormais renommée In Flanders Fields From Middelkerke to Wevelgem) ! Alors que l’on pensait que la victoire allait se jouer entre Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech) et Wout Van Aert (Visma | Lease a Bike), parti à deux au sommet du dernier Kemmelberg à une trentaine de kilomètres de l’arrivée, les deux rivaux ont finalement été repris sous la flamme rouge. Ce sont donc les sprinteurs qui se sont disputés la gagne et c’est Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech) qui s’est imposé, devant Tobias Lund Andresen (Decathlon CMA CGM) et Christophe Laporte (Visma | Lease a Bike).

      Proper & entertaining bike race. A united peloton should almost always be able to catch 2 off the front. Even if they are MVDP and Vaneart. (Or the winner of MSR who won off the front with a cracked frame and brake rub 🤔).

      Some inside info from a Dutchman
      1) Wout went full with MvdP
      2) After Ieper MvdP did not fully work anymore. Wout noted, Mathieu said so too]
      3) Mathieu was good, but not excellent and felt Friday in his legs and was not sure to go with Wout. He said Wout was strong and he lost with the same feeling in a similar situation two years agO
      4) He knew he wasn't fully recovered so he was always in contact with the Team and Jasper who felt great, so the goal was to keep the peloton working and working to get them back and go for Jasper.
      5) So this was good teamwork.

      Personally I would have loved to see a sprint and Wout win. Would have been great and a good boost. But I also noted that MvdP who was not in the best shape still dropped Wout on the last climb. Wout needs to add a few %, MvdP will train in Spain now (he is already there as I write this!) and no doubt will be excellent next Sunday. And he needs to be at his utmost best to be able to win because Tadej seems to have the upperhand. I would say even more than usual.
