Hi there. I’ve been shopping around and with what the bike shops have around me the Trek Roscoe 7 seems like it’s a bike beyond what I expect to need which gives me the idea that I won’t outgrow it and it will last me a long time. Beyond that, there is one bike that a local shop has makes me curious. For context, I’m in my 40s with a 9 and 11yo who plans on exploring mild trails with them. I did some fun trail riding in my late teens and 20s on a Schwinn Moab that is pretty much trashed at this point (bought in 2001) and want to get out with friends and ride beyond what my kids will do. So entry level to me seems to be the Trek Marlin 7, next step up would be the Roscoe 7, and then there’s this 2014… any opinions are greatly appreciated. I do really like the local shop by me and they offer lifetime service so that is also a reason why I’m looking at these treks more.

The used bike is $950

  1. It’s a little dated but man that’s a really nice build. If you’re just looking to do mellow trails that’ll be perfect. The lifetime free tune up is pretty incredible too.

Being a shop bike that’s fully tuned up, it might be ok. Private seller would be a no, because getting it fixed is expensive if you can’t diy. It’s probably fine for easy trails, but my big reservation is suspension service long term. Getting seals and bearings for the suspension is going to be tricky, like searching eBay for NOS seal kits. So you’d likely be riding it until something big wears out, then dumping it because it doesn’t appear to have a tapered head tube, so new forks won’t fit. $950 is kind of a lot for a bike that probably won’t last more than a couple years. You can find nice, modern hardtails with good parts for under $1500 that you can keep riding and maintaining for a lot longer. That’s the direction I’d go in your shoes.
