We begin this episode in the town of Bingen, on the southern end of the Rhine Gorge. Our route today will carry us through Wiesbaden and Mainz, where my mother grew up and we share some of her war stories before we leave the Rhine River and begin to follow the Main River toward Frankfurt, where we stay at a hotel near the airport. Two days of cold wind and rain frustrate our progress, and we eventually cycle to the train station for a short ride out of the airport zone, through the urban mess of Frankfurt and into a nicer town. We awake to blue skies and perfect riding conditions, following the lovely Main River Radweg into the pastoral countryside of Germany. We make it to Dorfprozelten, a small village on the river, where we find a lovely guesthouse and hunker down for another couple of days of very cold rain. Sometimes that’s just the way it rolls on a bicycle tour.

If you’re interested in checking out our planned route, we’ve included a link below. Bear in mind that we took deviations from time to time which might not be shown here, but this is 99% accurate.

  1. WOW! That scenery was really truly gorgeous! Thank you both for your sharing!
From my memory (LOL), Germany is about the same size as Ohio.
FWIW: Ohio has the highest Bicycle Trail mileage within America!
That was such a very beautiful scenery video!

  2. Another Wonderful video, my Wife and I chuckled when you kept talking about the rain, that is typical Germany weather. We lived there three years and saw it snow in July. We lived in Gelnhausen with a family that told us what it was like living through the war. God Bless your
Mother, she looks like a Beautiful person.

  3. I listened to this as I rode today in Central Oregon. I will be doing this ride in mid-September starting in Frankfurt and ending in Milan. So it looks like I need to be prepared for rain and cold weather. Again, what specific rain gear did you wear? Any brand recommendation for a rain jacket, pants, gloves and shoe covers are appreciated. Adding your mother's experience and history of the region was really cool. Also, the part about not finding lodging that accommodate bike in Frankfurt was very helpful. I look forward to the next video! Keep trekking Roland and Julianna! Any advice is appreciated on the VCA route.
