That’s pieces of your rim, scraped by some debris on a brake pad. Usually not a huge deal, but cleaning pads often is recommended.

I think that it is “normal” in the sense that it happens regularly, to many people.
I don’t believe it is “normal” in that it **should** happen.
I think it is from grit or sand getting embedded in the rubber, and it begins to scrape away aluminum from the brake track and build up in the pad. Over time the rim will develop rough grooves where the shard is running. Any grinding noise should be addressed quickly and the bits can, and should be cleaned from the pads.

Carefully pick them out if you can. Braking often improves afterwards 👍
