You can cycle from Shoreditch in London’s east end to Stoke Newington in north London entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.

The route is 4.8km long (3 miles) and makes use of Cycleway 1, supported by various LTNs including Stoke Newington LTN, Mildmay LTN, and Hoxton East LTN.

  1. This is class. It's almost as if there is some sort of zombie apocalypse in the location you are heading to and instead of everyone going nuts and panicking, they've picked up a bicycle and ridden the other way, huge waves of them 😅

Literally never seen so many people on bicycles besides an event.

    Nice one.

  2. Perhaps an 'outside' view to answer your question on 'do you prefer vids from during day-time rush-hour'? I would have thought not, since as an outsider (albeit a born Londoner) I enjoy the relaxed, safe pace most of your vids are. But I was very pleasantly surprised as to how 'manageable' this would be for me in a return to London. Obviously some routes this time of day would be 'no-go' for me (Some bridges over the Thames, for example), but overall I really enjoyed this episode. I was surprised that with only a few diversions, this route was so straight.

Loved it! And I deeply envy seeing your blossoms in bloom. OMG, another month to go here in Toronto.

  3. Waterford rd is like this despite RBKC. I'm still undecided re Putney bridge to Sloane Square to go on kings road or the back streets, the back streets are good but you have to cross Wandsworth bridge road 😬 so I split it, I turn off on the bridge at Gonville st 😬😬😬 I'm hoping soon instead of crossing the traffic at speed willow bank will reopen to go left and under the bridge. But when re-entering kings road rush hour bikes heading out of Chelsea is busy busy X

  4. And of course the air quality for all has improved. Perhaps the message should be that bus gates improve air quality (and open up opportunities for improvements in cycling infrastructure). House prices increase along quieter streets and it's just nicer having quiet bicycles pass your doorstep than backed up lines of private motor vehicles.
Motor vehicles have their uses but poisoning residents and those they pass by should not be one of them.

  5. Great video. CS1 goes all the way to Ponders End high street and beyond. Great to see so many cyclists using it. My commute begins at 5 am and I’m used to the quiet traffic and clean air. More LTN’s and bus gates throughout central London will make it more desirable to commute by bike. No worrying about the price of petrol going up because of another war for oil.

  6. This is essentially my daily commute, though starting closer to Finsbury Park and ending at Liverpool St. CS1 is really nice for the most part, but Pitfield Street is a pain sometimes (Hoxton East LTN can't come soon enough), and south of the Old Street crossing it deteriorates quite a bit – Primrose Street in the morning is a joke, half the road taken up by construction works and heaps of commercial traffic from both directions, and Bishopsgate in general needs a rethink. Rest of the route though – lovely!

  7. Cheers Jon love the commuter videos, real buzz around London this spring – one on Albert Bridge on the cards? Or Queenstown lanes new cycle lane?

  8. I live in Milton Keynes now but org from north london,. We are spoilt here with the shared padestriancycle routes here its just a shame everyone drives… I would never think I would have seen so many people now using these routes… Would love a colab with someone like Evan edinger for a cycle chat/interview

  9. @6:59 that looks pretty narrow for new infrastructure on a commuter route … fine when you're going against the flow, but presumably in the evenings demand overwhelms it!

  10. Thanks for the video. Slightly ambitious request – my wife and I like to come up from Kent and explore London by bike. We would love to see a video showing the best way to do an inner London circle route as an activity to do.

  11. I always think that it would be so easy to make a LCR April fools video, like just do either the worst route or the usual low traffic route but in any other city

  12. Did my first commute on my ebike from Walthamstow to Canada Water on Saturday. So much more fun than the boring 60 min tube journey and managed to get some training in! Was really impressed with the quality of the cycling infrastructure. Takes a ride to get used to how to merge onto different cycle ways etc. but now I'm set. Think I'll stop using the tube from now unless it's vasty quicker.

  13. While the improvements to Cycleway 1 are definitely welcome, I don't think it's ever going to completely get over its status as a compromise to avoid installing much needed cycle lanes on the major arterial routes, and there are lots of sections which still feel a bit bodgy. A particular bugbear of mine is that blind corner on Balls Pond road (which can be seen on the video at 6:14). Riders coming the other way down Kingsbury Road tend to be going quite fast due to the slight slope leading from the railway bridge. I've made a habit of always ringing my bell when approaching the corner from the south, and when riding the other way I switch to the main carriageway before the corner rather than using that narrow section of cycle lane on Kingsbury Road.

  14. 5:02 The crossroads of Lawford Road and Northchurch Terrace always seem unusual to me. It’s cycle-only in each direction, but no ‘give way’ signs indicate priority, so it functions as a low-speed, self-organising junction governed by reciprocal yielding…

  15. Good Afternoon , thank you for yet another wonderful video !

Will you check out Albert Bridge? The news says it's closed to motor vehicles for repairs, but open to cyclists, I wonder what effect on the local traffic levels this might have , especially on the North Bank and Chelsea

  16. The alternate route through the estate you mentioned is actually due to be formalised with a dedicated cycle track at some point as part of the liveable neighbourhood. It’s not shown on the project website because it’s being delivered via housing rather than highways. You can see the plans in the consultation drawings. Also, they just started setting up today for revamping King Henry’s Walk and closing Queen Margaret’s Grove.

  17. How would you do a stamford hill to South Kensigton? Down C1 and along the Thames or Finsbury park Regents canal way? Would be interested to see a video. Love your work!

  18. Great video! The cycle path is a bit convoluted, but I really like the low traffic street bits. And yes it's amazing to see how many people now bike in London

  19. Great video. I know different borough, but have to say bit disappointing to see Lambeth moving to bay-only parking for ebikes in advance of the May elections with a vague "aim" to find more parling spaces to turn into places to pick up and leave bikes. Where you have areas where the walk to pick one up is ten plus minutes, you effectively set back interest in using them.
Seems your video about pre-election wobbles at the start of the year was prescient! Note with slight trepidation that the wondeful scheme planned around Peckham Rye that was due to start construction in Feb has so far had nothing commenced.
