I think STX RC is the sleeper 7-9 speed option. Looks great, shifts amazing, and are cheap. I used mostly NOS RC parts on my Trek 730 build.
If I get a 24” or smaller 26” bike I swap out the likely damaged or bent unit for STX. They are common and cheaper than RC. I find 7spd STX to be the easiest to set up and survive kid abuse.

STX RC is bliss. STX is also good.
Holy saddle angle
I just love that rose gold finish. Picked up some pieces for that
I had STX on a Bridgestone MB-5. Probably one of the better looking old school groupsets I’ve ever seen firsthand.
Admittedly didn’t ride it much though as I had to sell it when we downsize-moved.

It’s beautiful but finding chainrings is a hassle

They are great!
The stx rc without the sticker is one of the best all silver derailleurs. Understated, reliable 8 speed perfection
I’m actually strictly anti-stx because of the nonstandard chainrings.
Sorry. The stuff works well enough, I just can’t abide by that. Deore LX and XT 7-8-9 speed is plentiful and relatively affordable/basically free.
