Best advice is be greener use bus train or walk and then you cant get down for using phone for being a passenger
This is the problem though – why is it that the volvo had a crap interface for the user (a screen) that presents a higher risk when the user is wanting to adjust basic controls? It doesn't make any sense. Ergonomics cannot be integrated into screens so why force users to use a screen if it is not necessary? If there is no excuse to have a phone in your hand – there is no excuse for poor design.

My mum has a brand new volvo that i sometimes need to drive. The infotainment system is a nightmare to navigate and get used to. Its also slow and dim witted.

More generally technology use in a car is simple, if it has any affect on your ability to drive safely then don't use it whilst in a middle of a journey.
What if I am holding it in my hand but the battery is dead and is not operating, same as I would be holding my wallet.
Why it is fine to have giant screen(s) in the car, and at the same prohibit mobile phones?

Why do motorists get penalised multiple times, ie fines, points and possibly banned, yet thieves illegal immigrants, rapists etc only get 1 penalty?

Just try and use a fixed touchscreen accurately when you hit a pothole. You were just trying to turn the heating up and you end up hitting the ejector seat button! Also, think about the difference in cost to have everything connected with buttons and levers compared to having a cheap mass produced tablet and Bluetooth! Plus it looks shit.

Common sense has left the room. Cars with 170mph on Speedometer, Cars with a Touchscreen instead of a dash. No seatbelts in public transport but required in private.
Driving over potholes is legal and recommended as its considered "safer" than swerving. So is legal to pay taxes for pothole repairs and not having them repaired properly or at all.
No wonder people struggle mentally to find meaning and reason on a day to day basis.
