I am trying to install a new chain and discovered an issue with the derailleur (not rode this bike for a couple years). In the position shown in the first photo I cannot drop below gear 6 as the middle cog is hitting the cassette. The second photo is how other setups online look, which makes sense as it gets the cog out the way of the cassette. My derailleur however will not stay in this position and keeps springing back up. Any ideas before the bike shop?

Did you shorten the chain to the length of the old chain? It looks too long.
is your chain on the front chain rings? its way too long if so.
Did you shorten the chain? It’ll hold itself in position if the chain is taut
Your chain is too long.
I‘m not sure how old that derailleur is, but recent SRAM ones have this button to lock the cage in the ‚front‘ position, the opposite of the first photo. It makes installing a new chain a lot easier.
Edit: I just checked again. Look down below the M of SRAM. You’ll see a lock symbol. Push the button, keep it pushed, move the cage forward and then release the button.
