Bacon and eggs to start, a brutal climb in the middle and beer from the bakery to finish. Day 7 of our cycling adventure to Croatia clearly felt like mixing things up a bit. We rode past ancient sandstone, got the stern look from Schloss Zwingenberg, and realised its former residents weren’t so much knights as full‑time robber barons who’d given their moral compass permanent leave.

On the way, we spent an hour playing tag on bikes with an older couple on e‑bikes. Lunch was German Knackwürstchen that snapped so loudly even the man checking the bins politely declined the one we offered him.

Around Heilbronn we got a free introduction to industry, strange smells and heavy trucks, followed by a climb my thighs and my Graves disease both had opinions about. Luckily I have Wim, who knows exactly when I’m playing my Graves card for good reason and when I’m just whining. At the top, the reward was waiting: endless vineyards, bold‑sounding wines and a route that unspooled like a ribbon through the green, followed by perfect gravel and a glorious slide onto smooth asphalt towards Löwenstein.

There we rolled into the village with empty legs, full heads and a serious thirst. The only café was closed, but the bakery sold beer, so in the end all the pieces still fell neatly into place.
