I’m Mike Lay a professional surfer and amateur cyclist from Cornwall in the UK. I’m embarking on a bikepacking odyssey that will eventually see me cycle and surf around the whole of Britain, a clockwise circumnavigation that I aim to complete in stages over the next few years.
This video is the first in the series and documents the painful journey from my house to Gwithian beach in West Cornwall. It was far from easy… the cycling was hard, the trailer kept breaking and I’ve never made a video before, but blimey I had a good time (minimal ‘good time’ footage in the video).

Please go here… so many un- ridden spots on this stretch of coastal path… you might find other spots here… coastal path is perfect for wave finding… ❤😊 https://youtube.com/watch?v=AIPVeWO6jW8&feature=shared
Mike, you do you, and we’ll ride along with you🤙🤙
Don't skip Lincolnshire Pard. We're off the radar, but definitely have our days; and a small, hardy and welcoming crew out when it's on.
15:00 minutes in is a great place for a cream tea 😋
You seem like a really honest relatable guy, looking forward to your future content and following your adventure 🏄♂️
You should definitely go to Sandwood bay in the very NW of mainland Scotland, one could say the most beautiful and amazing surf beaches in the uk when taking all factors into account.
Wow cool project I wish you good luck! Really motivating and I love your humour, it helps to have humour when you only have yourself to hang out with.
I am leaving in January for Spain going to be traveling with my enduro bike and a trailer. Cheers homie enjoy the surf!
If you fancy any company on a leg can we join in?
Cool challenge, great video and intro to your odyssey & yourself (I've seen you in Frankie's social media posts but had no idea what you did for a living), look forward to seeing the rest of the trip over the months & years – let me know if you ever need a camera operator for any interview parts (I'm no videographer either though, tbh)
Please keep going Mike! This was lovely to watch.
Good (partially retrospective?) luck, keen to see more 🙂 looked like some potentially nice set ups on the Isle of Barra if you slog it to the outer Hebrides.
Ive subscribed to watch the suffering if it makes you feel any better. Look forward to the rest
Yeah dude!!! This was sick! Subscribed. Love the authenticity, feels like classic youtube. Look forward to vicariously following this trip and seeing how your approach to film-making evolves as time goes on.
Glad to see you're doing well mate, looking forward to following along. All the best to you and the family
This is top notch work, I love the cut out map!
Hi Mike, if you can get to a builders merchant or a diy shop ask for some self tapping screws, they basically screw themselves into metal as they have little blades right at the tip, three of them screwed into the hitch and into the seat post would do the trick, shouldn't cost too much either..
Epic! 🙂
Best of luck with your adventure. 🌅
yes mike
I’m looking forwards to the next video! When will it be here? Are you still exploring?
Looking forward to seeing this series. If you need any help when your coming through Gower get in touch mate.
Good luck. This feels like a nice thing to support. Hope you enjoy the cycling more because it’s a lovely way to see the country x
Hey Mike, just wanted to say thanks for sharing this. Watching you break the journey down into stages really hit home for me. I’ve got a young lad and we’re right on the edge of making a surf van for adventures, and this has genuinely opened my eyes to how adventures don’t have to be all-or-nothing. Weekends, short breaks, one leg at a time; it suddenly feels way more doable as a dad.
Also, don’t stress the editing. The raw, honest feel of this is exactly what makes it work. It feels real, not over-polished, and that’s refreshing. You can tell you’re having a good time, even when it’s hard, and that’s infectious. Looking forward to following the journey and seeing where it takes you. Cheers for the inspiration 🙏
just stumbled upon this series.. This is a dreamy idea! – I cannot believe you are on a single speed bike.. I'm 9mins in, wondering if that is something you stick with! Fair play for doing it all 🙂
