Picked up a Miyata 1000LT today with some mods on it. A previous owner had swapped out the drop bars and bar end shifters for a flat bar and sram grip shifters. Luckily the guy I bought it from had the original parts as well. These are the bar ends that originally with the bike and they have clearly been kicking around in less than ideal environments for 10+ years. Are they rusted to death? Any shot of restoring these? Any tips hugely appreciated!

Nothing about that looks non-functional. They’re ugly, but they probably work fine. I would just pull them apart clean and grease put it back together.

Now if you wanted them to be beautiful you could pull them apart and spend a long period of time sanding and polishing… Which is exactly what I would do!

    Have fun!

they look fine or what’s wrong with them?

have you installed & use them or just got these?

how many positions does the rear shifter have 7, 8, o 9?

what’s important is for the rear shifter that indexes, or well both, is that washer piece that the shifters sits on top of does not have rounded corners and the machine screw that holds the shifters in place is somewhat tight. this will help maintain the accuracy of the index shifting.

when can replace these often will similar down town shifters if I correctly remember.

also, front derailler choice is important. why? different models have higher spring constants which makes maintain the cable tension more difficult for the shifter. ideally, the old school suntour reverse pull derailleurs are great for this reason.

I’d probably WD40 the heck out of the outside and take off all that gunk and then work it into the mechanism, wipe it all down and then apply some triflow and see how it’s working.

  4. I would take it apart, sand smooth, fill in deep scratches with bondo, and epoxy coat, then rubber dip the levers.
