I just bought a used Giant Trance X 29 from 2022 and it has this Rockshox Maxle with some kind of spline. It's not torx, although I am able to remove it with a T40 bit but it's a little loose.
That maxel is cooked. It’s supposed to be a 6mm hex (I think) . Someone buggered that bad, I would replace it IMHO

don’t use this axle anymore. the reason why a t40 is (loosely) fitting is because someone stripped the hex interface and had to hammer in a t40 to get it out.
get a new axle. or be prepared to have a bad time next time the front wheel has to come off.

This was a 6mm hex that was seized/stripped so the previous owner hammered a torx in to get it out. You Ideally want a new thru axle not a different tool

Well it was a 6 mm Allen but it’s clearly stripped. Get a new one since the T40 is a temporary fix to get it off. I wouldn’t rely on using temporary measures anymore. Buy a replacement.

Someone has stripped the allen key and hammered that star shaped tool into it so they can remove it.
Use whatever does the job and doesn’t strip it again.

Looks like you already removed it? Does that help?

Someone fuked it up using a 1/4 instead of a 6mm

Someone hammered a Torx into a stripped Allen hole. Replace the axle.
