Trek has 29 inch wheels and is 300 pounds and the phantom is 250 with 27 inch wheels but I think I can get it for a bit lower. Which one is a better option ?
Pretty sure the Giant has an air fork whereas the trek has a coil fork. I had the 29er fathom from the generation before that one and liked it. Really both these bikes would be fine for your first “real” mountain bike.

The Giant is spec’ed better, but you will want to check the drive train. Chain and cassette would jump the price tag quite a bit.

The problem with the marlin 4 is its VERY low component spec, in addition to it being old standards.
If you were talking about a marlin 6/7 I would go with the trek. But in this case you don’t get tubeless compatable wheels, the worst fork there is, a Shimano essa etc.
I have a marlin gen5 I put over $1000 in to, it has a manitou air fork and upgraded wheels and 4 piston brakes, it’s a VERY good bike.
But that isn’t worth doing, I coulda just got a Roscoe or one of the higher end XC hardtails.
I know that doesn’t answer your question but it is info you can factor into your decision.
