Hi,

I bought a Principia Gravel 10 2 weeks ago. I have just discovered that the front brake’s cable has been peeling the paint of the bike’s paint. Is this normal behaviour ? Can I fix easily or just complain to the bike shop ?

Thank you for your help,

  1. The paint will need to be re-painted. Either the manufacturer or the bike shop has the exact color available, or it will have to be something that is only close.

To prevent this from happening again, get frame protection tape. If the cable can be routed so that it doesn’t touch the frame, do that as well.

  2. Yes, that’s normal. You can get stickers to go on the frame or I like the little rubber things that go around the cable to prevent them rubbing.

No point in complaining – it’s just wear from normal use.

Normal? Not really as it could easily be prevented. Use a frame sticker. Or change cable length if that makes a difference.

  4. This is a low end bike, corners were cut to save money. Thin layers of paint, hardly any durable top coating. Sad to see that a sticker gets nuked from the partslist for a couple of cents. Put a transparent sticker on it and ride your bike. The more you ride it, the more fun you will have and the more scratches it will get. It’s a gravel bike, it will suffer when you take it off road.

  5. Do you want to ride it or look at it? If you ride it, its going to get “character” from mundane things to getting knocked over and spills. It is what it is.

OH NO! The bike I ride is no longer in museum grade mint condition! Who can I complain to??

Oh no, time for a new bice, hope you wice’s boyfriend gives you the allowance soon.

  8. Normal. Preventable with a clear sticker but this will happen on the vast majority of bikes with external cable routing, some sooner and some later.

My last bike came with stickers but it was up to me to apply them. I have never seen a shop do it unless asked to do it.

It’s normal wear, not anything to complain to the shop about. There are frame stickers and cable protectors for this.

It’s people like you that make what should be a relatively easy job a very hard to place to work.
