  1. Different riders will have different standards for when to replace. Some would have replaced long ago, others run them right out. Riding conditions and budget play a factor.

Generally speaking they’re pretty toasted, but if you don’t ride a lot, are riding in drier conditions, and need to stretch your funds, then you could squeeze a bit longer out of them. No matter how you look at it, replace anywhere from immediately to in the near future.

You didn’t ask, but fwiw, the front tire, while still serviceable, is also past its best grip offering days.

Summer is coming. Depending where you are and what riding you do you could ride it until you decide you need more grip.

Tldr it’s fine to ride as long as you’re happy with less grip.

  3. Do you ride anywhere that mountain bike tyres provide the grip you require?

    If so, change them both.

If you ride fire roads / gravel and are never on the limit of grip then they have more life.

But those tyres are also not expensive so why not change them?

I wouldn’t race on it, but I’d squeeze a few more (summer) runs out of it

Depends on the terrain you ride… the side knobs still have life but I’m guessing you don’t lean in to them too much looking at that. You’re going to have quite compromised braking on that rear in anything remotely loose or soft and lack any grip on climbing. Look like schwalbe Smart sams? They’re pretty cheap just replace it.

If you want a new one, put your front to the back and get a new one for your front.
