Shimano Ultegra BR 8170: After I meticulously removed the old olive, I am now at a point that it is really hard to slide the new olive onto the (still old) Insert pin and Hose – how much force is still ok or is something conpletly wrong? I dont want cut my Brake Hose.. that‘s why I am trying to reuse the barb/insert-pin

  1. The hose had expanded in the middle for the old olive. I really would just cut the hose, you can reuse the barb as well if you want to and a cutter and barb install tool is like 15$ on amazon if you need something cheap that will get there quickly.

  2. You have to cut the hose. If it gets too short, you will need to replace it. There’s no guarantee that you will get a good seal if you manage to push a new olive onto the hose. I wouldn’t recommend it at all. Brakes are safety critical, don’t make shortcuts like that.

  3. You should cut the hose.

There are 3 layers in the brake hose.

You know when crushing the olive it is pretty destructive. You would never know if it introduced any weak spots in the layers.

Don’t mess around with brakes. Do it the proper way. And just because it works after install means it will keep working as you ride.
