I got this brand new look Giant Reign 2020 27.5. It has scratches on only one side of the frame (very small scratches) and also on the stanchions. It has a Rockshox Yari 170mm on the front and it also is a bit scratched up. Its spitting a bit of oil but it rides brand new. Should I change it or repair it? If I can repair it what parts should I replace inside so that it doesnt spit oil?

  1. If it’s spitting oil you should def do a lower service and replace the seals. There are stanchion scratch repair kits you can buy, but I understand people have had success lightly sanding the scratched area, filling with nail polish, and sanding again until smooth. I’m sure there are YouTube’s. Worth a shot.

  2. Yeah time to give the bike away and buy a new one. Mountain bikes aren’t meant to be scratched, on trees or rocks or dirt when you inevitably crash.

  3. How deep are the scratches? If very shallow you may be able to get away with deburring them very carefully with a file and very fine wet sanding. You will then need to do a lower leg service and replace the wiper seals and foam o rings.

The next step up from that is stanchion replacement/new crown steerer unit (CSU) this is probably more expensive in parts and labour than the fork is worth especially with sales that are on

Also, what’s up with the tennis ball?

Change the seals, my old dh bike was pissing oil and seals just fixed the problem

  6. I don’t understand why you would be looking to replace parts on a brand new bike.

Is it a brand new bike?

    How did it get scratched?

  7. I have way worse scratches on my kashima stanchions, but they are higher up, so they matter less. You will have to service it more frequently, or maybe you can try one of those kits that can repair these kind of scratches but they’re quite expensive

It’s the end of the road for that bike, send it to me for proper disposal if the scratches become too much to bear.

my bike is a few days old and has scratches, Dont stress about it brother it doesnt look deep enough to cause problems at the moment 👍🏼

Depending on your budget, I’d atleast replace the seals and service. If you can afford it would be easier to replace the whole thing but it will get scratched again so I wouldn’t go high end on anything. I debated getting some gucci on mine and decided it would just get trashed anyway just bought new decals
