You don’t have to remove the freewheel for maintenance to your bearings.
But if you insist you will need a 11mm (or 12mm?) hex key.

You need to stick an allen key in it, it will usually be 12, 14 or 15mm. The 15mm size is specific to bikes so you won’t find it on tool kits. If it’s a shimano hub you’ll have a reference written on it on the side, check that out and post it here. With the reference you can look for instructions.

  3. On the second photo, you see the ring around the bearing? It has 2 notches. You should use the dedicated tool to unscrew that ring and the freehub will loosen up.

  4. This is on a Giant Revolt. So, am I supposed to insert a hex key in to the Non-drive side and turn counter-clockwise? The hex key is HUGE….A lot more than 10mm.

Also, even if I was only going to pull that red bearing, there is no way to get any purchase on the bearing to push/pull it out because it is seated flush against some metal. On the outer ring of the bearing it almost looks as if there is a retainer-clip but I’m not sure. Can you see the half circle around the outside of the bearing?

There is a few reasons I am doing this.

    1. My hub is starting to sound unhealthy. Sort of a gritty, grinding noise. Also, it’s not freewheeling very smoothly.

    2. While I am there, I want to change the wheel bearings. THe bike is 5 yrs old with a lot of miles and they are also a little gritty.

    3. I love learning about this stuff!
