Why is Europe running out of children? 👶
Every country on this map is below 2.1 – the rate needed to maintain a stable population without immigration. Every single one.
The lowest is in EU is Malta at 1.01. Followed by Spain at 1.10 and Lithuania at 1.11. These countries are losing a generation with every cycle.
The highest in the EU is Bulgaria at 1.72 and Slovenia at 1.52. Outside the EU, Montenegro leads at 1.75.
Ukraine sits at just 0.98 — below 1.0 for the first time in recorded history, driven by war, displacement and mass emigration.
France at 1.61 is often cited as the European success story in fertility policy. Heavy family benefits, generous parental leave and subsidised childcare. And still not enough.
What would need to change for people to have more children? 👇
