Hi all, I came across a 1997 Trek 5200 carbon fiber bike in okay condition. It seems reasonably maintained, but not perfect — the chain looks a bit worn and may need replacing.
The seller is asking 700 AUD (around $460 USD). Do you think it’s worth it at this price?
Also, is it still safe to ride a carbon bike from this era? And how does the performance compare to more modern bikes?
Any advice would be appreciated!

I’ve recently bought a 2017 Merida Scultura 300 for less money.
just ignore this bike. it will not ride well for any modern application. i know Aus market is different to US market, but id be surprised if you couldn’t find a better bike at a better price.
What is the application you’re intending to use a bike for? Commuting? cruising rides? sport recreation? this is the most important thing to ask as you start searching for a bike.
$200 and keep it as a novelty item not to ride
Thanks everyone! I don’t really have a sense of road bike pricing.
Absolutely not worth it. What the heck are these handlebars? Was this person born with backwards wrists?
Absolutely not worth it. I recently bought a 2015 ScottCR1 for $750 aud.
I wouldn’t trust 30 year old carbon.
