I’m thinking about grabbing the Garmin Edge MTB since it’s now on sale for $299. Is it good enough, or would it make more sense to go with something like the Edge 540 or 1050? I mostly ride MTB, but I do take my road bike out sometimes.

I bought a watch
Much more useful in general
TIL Garmin still exists
Doesn’t your phone already provide all the same data?
That screen is just shockingly small when you see it. The edge 550 is the smallest I would go and it has all the MTB features.
If you aren’t using a power meter and you’re not really concerned about complex nav, just get a watch.
The main appeal of the MTB is the smaller form factor (helpful if you’re running it on the toptube) and the DH/shuttle lap features.
The 540 is also on sale and more useful as a general purpose device (easier nav/better screen, Cimbpro, training features).
Ask yourself honestly what data you want from this and what you are going to do with that data. They are pretty useless for nav. Unless you are racing and trying to track lap times I don’t see the point.
The new garmin edge mtb is a nice device, but the overall size of it is tiny. If it was me I’d get the 1050. I wouldn’t even look at the 840 since it’s older. 550/850 only if you want the smaller size.
I have one. I like it. I use it for general tracking, and monitoring my heart rate in real time. I sometimes wish it had a bigger screen, but it’s usable.
There are cheaper ways to carry extra weight.
