Join me, I cycle all the way from Widnes, crossing the Silver Jubilee Bridge, on into Runcorn and following the Bridgewater Canal up to Walton Hall, Warrington. Along the way, I’ll mark out all the named bridges and stop off for a bite to eat (you can skip that bit if you want). Just below, I’ve included the GPX file so you can follow this route from Widnes Ferry Lock as well.
The ride follows peaceful canal paths, scenic waterside stretches, and some beautiful Cheshire countryside before finishing at the stunning Walton Hall and Gardens.
The Bridgewater Canal is one of the most important canals in British industrial history, originally opened in 1761 to transport coal from the Duke of Bridgewater’s mines. Today, it makes for a fantastic cycling and walking route connecting towns, countryside, and historic landmarks across the North West.
Route highlights include:
• The Silver Jubilee Bridge at Widnes
• Quiet stretches of the Bridgewater Canal
• Cheshire countryside paths
• Walton Hall and Gardens in Warrington
Here’s the GPX file, free to download, just to let you know this file will bring you out at Moore, where I stop for my Pitstop and The Shed cafe and then take you on to Walton Hall. You can still continue down the Canal Path, as I do in the video; you’ll notice it can get very muddy, and it isn’t paved. So, it’s down to personal choice at the end.
