  1. If you don’t have the right crank bolts, you gotta do whatcha gotta do!

Does this work well with little ring to little ring? Or does the chain catch on the inside of the big ring?

Could have used washers, or at least do a better job cutting the chainring.

Proof of concept successful, now finish it permanently.

I don’t get why you did this, it won’t shift well. When I did it it was to eliminate the outer ring and keep the inner two, without buying new bolts.

Analog cycles did something like this. I think they called it turkey vulture gearing or something.

I haven’t seen a 500EX front mech in a looong time. Nostagic! 24-48 jump!? Impressive.

I actually sorta love how the cut-up chainring matches the radius of the crankarm spider so perfectly. My OCD wants to get a file or grinder wheel and shape those custom washers to match the profile of the 48t ring… but, this is completely functional as-is. Respect!

I vote you file these down and get some blue or gold anodized chainring bolts to finish this off in style when you’ve got the time.

  5. This is awesome. It is the missing link in my cheap project I refuse to buy parts for

One of the things I love to do with my bikes is come up with a solution that leaves jagged sharp edges of metal in strange places, so I can constantly imagine what might happen if I happen to fall in just the right way

Is it being creative by using just what is on hand.? Yes.

Could the execution been better? Hell yes.

Nothing like sharp jagged edges to add to the “excitement “ of riding a bike.

Could’ve put a second chainring of equal size on the outside for shits and giggles. Or even a smaller one to confuse onlookers

If you grind them down a bit to conform to the shape of the chainring bolthead, they’ll look like very nice washers.
