I think that is just a crank boot to protect from scratching. Not necessary.

You can or you can take them off if you don’t like them.
They’re there to protect the crank against strikes, since it’s made of carbon.

Why not?

I would 100% keep it. Weights nearly nothing, and protect the cranks – it’s surprsingly easy to hit this part during storage/manipulations etc. Nothing crucial, but easy way how to keep things nice.

I’d leave it if you ride rough terrain. Not just for your shoes but mostly for rocks or drops with risk of damaging your carbon cranks. For roadwork I’d leave them off..

I keep a pair installed and I have an extra pair for when they break off. My last bike suffered many strikes at the end of the cranks. And most from getting on/off street curbs when walking the bike ðŸ˜

I’ve never used them on my carbon cranks. That being said I’ve never resold my bike. Cranks will look better long term if you use them.

Keep the crank boots on. Weight is negligible, barely visible and will protect your expensive equipment.

If you’re in a very dusty or sandy area, be mindful to wash under the boot.

Keep it. Extra protection.

Probably a good idea for gravel riding incase you’re coasting with your legs at 12 and 6 and you strike a root or rock or something on some single track. Maybe I should buy some 🤔
