Hey I was test driving one of my freinds old bikes and during a gear shift the entire rear of the bike started making all sorts of noices. Under further investigation it seams the derailleur just died. Can anyone help? Or do I need to buy replacement parts

That drivechain is incredibly old, replacement parts will be very very cheap. Just count the number of cogs and search for “shimano X-speed derailleur”
I will pour one out for you. My deepest condolences.
That is toast.
Yeah it’s fucked you will need to get a new derailleur an maybe a chain because it might got bend up and then set the limit screws so it’s doesn’t happen again
New deralleur time.
Parts don’t last forever they get damaged, wear out & break
Yup. You need a new one
I was confused, it’s upside down but still broken, it happens. Replace it with a new chain also
I think these RD’s are less than $15 at most bike shops. No more than $20. Installation and adjusting is easy, but there are a lot of steps. You might need a new hanger depending on what happens and how the bike was treated previously. Would double your repair cost, but installation is just two bolts. Worst case scenario if you do the work yourself? $50
Duuuuude
I thought mine was bad. At least it still shifts and tensions.
