I’m looking to purchase my first bike and have heard that buying used is often a more economical option. That said, I’m not very familiar with what I should be looking for when purchasing a used bike. Based on the price and condition, do you think either of these bikes would be a good choice for a first bike? Both are priced around $400.

Are you specifically looking for a road bike? Are you hoping to get into longer distance paved riding and pushing yourself? Have you checked that these are both the right size for you?
If so, the first one is definitely new-er, I think early 2010s. The second one is probably 2000s somewhere. They’re both pretty entry level spec, do the job but nothing that makes them worth a lot of money. I’d probably say about 250-300 for the first one, closer to 200 for the second. Unless 1) they’re being sold by an actual shop or cooperative which services the bikes and provides a warranty, or 2) your area has a particularly harsh second hand bike market for some reason.
