I'm looking at a used Marin Larkspur 2 for city commuting and wanted to see if $400 is a fair price. It seems like a great "mountain bike" for rougher urban roads, but I wanted to know if that 1×11 Deore setup and the dropper post are actually practical for daily commuting or if they’re just extra things to maintain. Also, just a heads-up that the seller has racks shown in the photos, but the bike is being sold without them—does $400 still feel like a solid deal for the bare bike, or should I keep looking?

I own it for biking the kiddo around, running errands, etc. It’s a very comfortable bike at base specs, and $400 is a steal if in good condition.
Great bike, lot of fun, don’t think it’s been around for that long so probably not that old. I’d be happy with 400 but hard to price as it’s a bit weird in some ways. Dropper post is actually just kinda nice to have and pretty practical for normal riding in my experience, nice to just be able to sit down when you’re waiting at the lights rather than having to balance the bike on your tippy toes.
Morning OP this is the first post I’ve seen today after a quick scroll and km happy to see it. Never knew about this bike and it’s functionality beautiful.
Worth it
I love this bike so much. It’s been on my list for ages.
400 is a great deal for a bike that will work both as a commuter and a proper gravel bike for weekends. Sure, if he had given racks too for that price it would have been great but even without racks, 400 is a lovely deal. Let’s not forget, it has a pretty great drivetrain and a dropper post.
I sell those at the shop I work at!
my answer is yes. 400 bucks even without the rack (esp if it’s in good condition) is a great deal and you’ll be more than comfortable imo.
the dropper post doesn’t need that much maintenance in my experience (only had one come through for servicing in the past year). just a creature comfort !
Resounding yes
That’s a screaming deal!
I have the Larkspur 1, paid twice as much as your deal, and absolutely love it! I ended up just buying new, because one never came up used, locally, like ever.
Whether you buy it, or not, someone is getting an awesome bike, for an awesome price!
That looks really comfortable.
