The journey home begins! After surviving the storms on the Isle of Wight cliffs, I’m heading back to the mainland. Join me for a beautiful sunny ride across the island, tackling Shorwell Shute and passing Carisbrooke Castle before catching the ferry to Portsmouth. From the busy cycle paths of Langstone Harbour to the famous Dutch Roundabout in Chichester, it’s a fantastic end to a memorable trip as I finally roll back into Bognor Regis.

In this video:
Leaving Grange Farm after a wild few days of camping.
Climbing the steep Shorwell Shute and passing Carisbrooke Castle.
The logistics of the Isle of Wight ferry to Portsmouth.
Navigating the scenic Langstone Harbour cycle path.
Reaching home: The final miles into Bognor Regis.

I’m Garry McGivern (Travelsonabike2), and I’ve been travelling the world by bike since 2008. Solo self-supported bicycle touring on my trusty bike, Passepartout. My vlogs are unscripted, down-to-earth and honest—sharing the highs, the lows, and everything in between of a long-distance cyclist. I’ve now cycled more than 60,000 miles around the world 🌏 and I’m still going.

DCM & Health Journey: In July 2018, I contracted severe sepsis shock and was placed in an induced coma. But after spending six weeks in the care of my local hospital. Where I also had a temporary hip fitted, I was allowed home. Since contracting sepsis, I have spent a lot of time in and out of hospital with various ailments. And in May 2023, I was diagnosed with Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy (DCM), which causes narrowing of the cervical spinal canal, leading to chronic spinal cord compression and resultant neurologic disability. And if that wasn’t enough, I have ongoing hip problems, which has resulted in multiple operations. But I’m still smiling and cycling. And continue riding my bike and touring as much as possible.

My video 📹 blogs complement my written blogs, which I publish daily on my website, https://www.garrymcgivern.com/, each time I head off on a bicycle tour. Bear in mind when watching. The video 📹 is unscripted and recorded as I cycle along 🚲, and might not be of the highest quality. The footage is then cobbled together when I get home. It’s certainly no Hollywood 🎬 production. But it might just make you smile and inspire you to get on your bike and head off on your own bicycle tour.

  1. A++++++. That main road to Cowes to the ferry looked horrid. I would have been terrified riding on that with all those cars passing close and fast. More generally the traffic noise was horrendous.

Hope you are fit and well spring 2026 for more cycling adventures.
