  1. Is fixed up old mountain bikes so popular these days it’s generating these inflated dumb prices? I don’t see lots of people riding standard bikes fixed up ones or just beat up dailies over say electric ones or even scooters.

  2. I think there’s some paul components parts on that build, which would partially explain the price.

I wouldmt ever pay for the bike, but if it’s genuinely original nd in excellent condition, it’s certainly worth more than a random old 80s MTB.

  4. All original parts and it looks about as close to brand new as you’ll find. Of course, it isn’t *worth* the price. What they’re looking for is the guy who wanted one back in the day and couldn’t afford it. Now, he can and **the money is going to a coop that he wants to support**. YOLO!

  5. Oh yeah I saw this on Marketplace. Just wildly expensive, im not sure which volunteer priced this one.

This price actually isn’t too crazy for something like this, a little high, but its high because this is the first mass production Mountain bike ever made this isn’t some beat up 90s Hardrock.

Someone isn’t buying this to ride, but to hang on a wall and look at, just like people that buy very high value vintage cars don’t really drive them. It’s all about collecting.

This is a really rare and cool bike and well worth that price to the right older millennial buyer. This is basically the first production mountain bike ever.

I hope the co-op finds that buyer.

I vaguely remember Sinyard buying up old Stumpjumpers for that price 15 or 20 years ago.

if thats not worth $1300 dollars to you dont buy it. im not sure whats worth posting here about. i hope the co-op gets their money for it and someone is happy to own this gem

  10. Highly collectable, historic bike, in nearly museum quality condition. If anything it’s underpriced.

This is why all my rockhoppers and stumpjumpers are what i consider my retirement investment /s

Depending on the area, I would say the price isn’t too far off. I’m sure there weren’t many to compare to, so start high and give people a chance to haggle down to your price. I sold one almost identical to this one about 5 yrs ago, not in a hot market, and less original parts for $700

Makes me feel better about the 1983 Stumpjumper I bought last week for $750 🙂

  14. I sold one of these, all original from my aunt who bought it new in 1984, back in 2006 for $60 because I was short for my $300 rent. God to be a 23 year old moron

Hating on bike co-ops is yuppy scum behaviour. This co-op serves the community, let them make a sale bro.

Yes, this was the beginning of mt. Biking. I had a 1981 bike similar to this that I road for a year in Colorado.

I have an 83, in grey, in my garage that I’m not going to restore. Willing to let go for half of this! /s.

At least it looks like it’s been well loved and cared for – some nice upgrades too.
