Hi everyone

I just bought this brand new Trek Fuel Ex 9.8 carbon gen 7 a few days ago.

As with all my new Mtb’s I like to convert them tubeless and put my favourite tires on.

When I got to the rear wheel (non drive side) the thru axle was extremely difficult to get off I spent about 30 mins trying, eventually came loose.

Re installed the rear wheel and torqued to 10nm (to spec).

I tried to loosen it again to see if it would be easy and it was not, felt impossible again. I pushed a little more and then I saw the frame becoming damaged?????

Noticed the rear derailleur was moving as well when I was tightening or loosening the thru axle.

Do you think trek will cover this under warranty? I don’t think this is my fault as I don’t think I did anything wrong.

Please help!

    Only one way to find out and thats ask them… if you are friendly with you lbs you could see if theyd be willing to submit it through them if they are a trek shop more likely its covered then

    Edit: id imagine no though cause its damage cause By a human not regular bike use

  2. If you just got the bike the people at trek will warranty it. Trek is very good about warranty coverage especially with a new bike. You might have to wait for parts or a new bike but it should cost you a thing other than time. At very least they can replace the part of the triangle in the rear that is damaged. Go talk to your shop.

  3. Go through the dealer, explain the situation, the dealer should at least be able to send a request to trek.

    That looks like the damage has gone through to the carbon. I wouldn’t have confidence in that dropout… (probably fine but probably is _not_ good enough for a brand new bike).

    Take it back immediately

    It is going to be tough to prove that is a defect. Maybe they will be cool and get you a new triangle, or at least a crash replacement.

  6. I don’t understand what happened here. It looks like you tried to remove the axle with a chisel, or you dropped the bike while working on it.
