My nephew has asked me to look at/fix this but I have never repaired any bikes before, nor do I know the parts etc (apologies!).
It looks like the derailleur part may have snapped off and the rear wheel is off (not pictured but I do have it) but it looks like it may go back on, once the chain and derailleur is on.
Is this salvageable (and/or fairly easy for a novice!)?

The derailleur hanger has snapped in two. You’d have to find and buy a replacement.
For a novice, the harder part would be adjusting the shifter once you get it back together.
That gap that you’re pointing to is normal. What broke is the derailleur hanger. It is a cheap and easy to replace part. Take the bike to a bike shop and ask for a replacement.
You don’t need a new derailleur. Just the hanger.
