I got a double flat (front and rear) on my Xtracycle Swoop last week so I am being paranoid and going full protection on the replacements…

Original spec: Schwalbe Super MotoX with an inner tube (26″ front, 20″ rear)

New Spec: Schwalbe Pick-up, tannus Armor, inner tube (front and rear, all sized per spec from TA), and Flat out/slime in tubes.

Issue: the 20″*1.5-2.5 tube is too long to fit in the tannus without folding over itself in multiple spots (see pictures – it’s way worse when inflated). Per instructions and sizing, I don’t need to trim the armor to fit, the armor+tire+tube combo should all work together…

Basically, I can’t get 20″ tubes in the 20″ tannus, inside the 20″ tires…. everything should work based on the specs from respective manufacturers, but nothing works…. any thoughts? I have spent hours trying to make it work at this point, both on the front and rear wheels…

Do I need to downsize the armor/tube/both further? The tirescfit perfectly without the armor, and the tubes fit perfectly in the tires without it, but when all combined, the tube doesn’t fit when the armor fits, and the armor doesn’t fit when the tube fits…

    Help!

Ps. Pics are only of the rear 20″ wheel, but the same problem on the front 26″ as well…

this r doesn’t allow cross-posts, so this is a duplicate of my post in r/CargoBike. Apologies if this is a no-no… truly hoping it is not…🤞

  2. Inflate the tube a bit so it has a shape. That should help with some of those folds. It’s going to be a tight fit. I’ve done these before and there is very little space to work so just keep at it.

Try putting a tiny bit of air in the tube to give it some body. Then, get one bead of the tire on the rim. Then try to get the Tannis liner on one bead and tuck that thing in. Push it way up because the edge is going to have to tuck around the bead of the tire. Now get the tube in and tucked wayyy up. Tuck the liner AND tire in. It’s super fucking hard, but use the palms and push! I have lousy wrists and hands and still was able to I make it happen, so you can too!

  4. first put the armour in the tire. if it is not smooth and perfectly even. don’t bother. then inflate the inner tube slightly and put the inner tube in last. then install tire fully on Rims, fully inflate until tire is seated properly

Read the instructions lol. You fit half the tire, then liner half into tire, then tube, then fit liner to the bead, then push on the tire

  6. I have the tannus armour on my mountain bike. After a couple months I got a puncture and when replacing the tube the armour was so compressed it was like a pancake. I left it out and it did regain its shape and back in it went.

When it’s a used tube it can cause problems. And the cutting line on the armour is important if the tire is narrower than the max specifications of the armour. But the protection of pickup tires is fine..
