After years of abuse, I folded my front rim in SF’s Golden Gate park on a full send. RIP to the Pacenti SL23’s.
I’m in the market for wide rim brake rims and while I love Cliffhangers, I’m hoping for a more spirited rim that can hit single track, but just as easily throw on 32mm slicks and keep up with a Saturday group ride. Keeping my 32h/32h Paul hubs.
I’ve narrowed it down to the Velocity Quill, Pacenti Forzas and the Astral Radiant. Currently a fan of Astral and probably leaning that way, but can anyone attest to whether they’ll hold up in the more aggressive use cases?
Looking for any advice, other rim recommendations, wheel builders you like in SFC? Also, if anyone in the city has a line on HED Belgium hoops in 32 spoke would seriously consider that as well – just seeing that they’re out of stock on HED’s website.
Thanks y’all!

I would *not* recommend rich lesnik. I got a wheelset built by him and all the spokes were poking out the nipples by about 2mm on the inside. I would strongly recommend Devon at mikes bikes or Clayton at Trek.
Reading this as someone who is pretty new into learning about bikes is hilarious. I barely understood a thing in this post 🤣
You can also check and see if the guys at Rivendell have anything in stock. They build wheels in house mostly now, I think. Being a Surly, I assume you have 132.5 spacing and can fit one of their 135mm hub wheels no problem.
nice case of pacifico in the front basket haha
I dont know what is wide for a rim brake rim. DT535s come in 700c and I can vouch for their 26″ cousins. Alex make a good rim too and they’re MTB focused so they should hold up.
I’m getting a set built at spoke easy, can let you know how that goes in a few days
My shop has a bunch of HED Belgium MSW rims in stock if you want me to check tomorrow.
Fergus over at Ritchey builds wheels, but it’s mostly for his friends
Rivendell has a guy who builds very nice wheels.
