If a company is claiming that their lab results are better than the current literature, tell them to send me a battery. I would love to see it! I'm tired of endlessly being bombarded with battery tech "breakthroughs". If I can't get it into my workshop today, then it doesn't exist.
I also forgot the biggest drawback, the price! They are incredibly expensive. Doesnt negate any of the other issues if it was cheaper regardless.

Quite right,
I know because I have a 12 and 24V mobile inverter systems using Sodium batteries for three years now. The voltage curve with 12V will work +/- with the inverter, with 24v the wider sodium voltage curve leaves more of the capacity unavailable with current inverters on the market. For 48v it is completely off the table – the inverters can't use the whole curve.
So Why do I use these two sodium battery packs at all? – because (unlike Lithium) they work in a temperature range from -20 to +50 Celius – which is handy for a service truck application, to run some common 120v AC tools on the road.
You're right.
Yet despite all limitations I still would prefer to use sodium batteries considering the environment issues.
Batteries, not badderies
One thing I would like to see is what happens when the battery pack fails. There is a lot of power stored in any of these chemistries the products of combustion are a serious problem. Lithium ion is well documented that when it fails it produces a fire emergency services cannot fight and the gases can kill or seriously injure.
I want to see a comparison of failure modes along with the other stats you show. As more and more of these storage solutions come online the importance of this becomes greater.
I think that over time les lithium, cobalt are going to be needed to be taken out of the ground because the batteries already made that have to be replaced, the lithium and other components are not consumed or destroyed and can be processed for a much cheaper cost to make new batteries
I think it will be big, just not right now. To address the voltage drop, I'm pretty sure the BMS that is adapted for the application could take care of it. Might push up the price of the battery to accomodate for the expensive BMS.
You are mostly right. lithium is great for compact usage. Cars would use those most effectively since price difference for up to 100kwh batteries is not that hugely different. But whole another type of story for gigawatt scale solar generation. Solar generation mega plants could effectively completely solve energy problems worldwide including heating and conditioning. We have way larger source of energy that we could ever need -Sun. Here is what Sodium has the biggest relative use case. Gigawatt scale batteries spread all over countries without super-huge hi voltage lines which are very very expensive to build and to maintain is the point of relatie economizing. Economies from avoiding large scale infrastructure and logistics for super large scale energy deliveries is the main incentive for sodium mega batteries production. Some countries are lucky having hydro pools which are natural batteries. But for those who have no such capacities for energy storage sodium is great! Do not forget DC battery stored energy is super stable, super comfortable to manage and transform and could avoid vast amounts of AC infrastructure. Even transport charging can be edesigned to power bank modes with near-range solar generation sourcing etc. This ain`t fast but totally probable system projection…Before fusion hits the market(if ever…)
you forgot to introduce the basics of the Na-Ion batteries
Will, has your opinion on sodium ion batteries changed with the recent improvements to the energy density, stability, and cost due to the use of new materials such as tin anodes and NVOH?

You really seem overly negative abt the NA Ion batteries. I imagine similar reactions to the first LiFePO3 batteries. Lithium is now a geopolitical issue, as are rare earth minerals. Cobalt, copper and nickel are not required for Na batteries. I'm looking at them as a less expensive alternative for portable amateur radio and my camper. Hopefully, the technology will improve to better specs
So how soon before these are on the US market , and what is the cost as compared to lithium batteries.

That bad round-trip efficiency must mean battery wastes substantial portion of the energy as heat -> they must get substantially hotter during charge/discharge, right?
latest improvement in Sodium ion is using Prussian blue in cathode to have voltage stable like LFP.

I think China wants to sell out of lithium first before issuing good sodium batteries, keeping market share and reducing incentives for other countries to produce, RandD sodium batteries.
Lithium supply is definitely an issue if you want to build a few days of storage for the world's total energy needs, which some people do propose honestly without knowing that there's not enough lithium in all worldwide estimated resources and reserves for that amount of batteries.
