I have got my options down to two bikes: the Giant Reign 29 2 2025 vs Canyon Spectral but I am having so much difficulty deciding which one. Links to exact bikes and specs at the bottom. Also welcome to other recommendations. Budget is circa £2000.
I am in the UK (North West) My riding will mostly be:
- Rocky, stepped, technical bridleways (Peaks, Lakes, Snowdonia)
- Long moorland crossings and remote valleys (Bowland, Dales)
- High‑mountain passes with hike‑a‑bike (Nan Bield, Helvellyn, Snowdon)
- Fast, rough doubletrack and limestone tracks (Dales)
- Occasional trail‑centre loops (Grizedale, Coed y Brenin, Penmachno)
- Also want the bike to be capable on downhill courses, easy to moderate routes (Antour, Dyfi, Bike Park Wales)
It's been around 10 years since I last rode, and that was mostly trial-centres with easily climbs, flow trails etc. That was on a 29" Cannondale hard tail (poor spec) and a Commencal Meta 55 26". Bikes have moved on considerable since then!
I recognise that the Reign 2 is heavily targeted towards the more aggressive downhills. But the price discount is quite something and it 'seems' like a lot more bike than the Canyon. Realistically, how difficult would the Reign be on the non fast downhill type stuff and climbing? That is my real question I guess. Is it going to be a complete pain in the ass or not quite a good but more than capable?

The bike for the conditions you’ve described, IMO, is a Neuron. See also Norco Optic, Ibis Ripley , Pivot Trailcat etc. Another interesting option would be the Scott Spark . In summary- the minute you’re planning to do a lot of climbing and even be having to hike the bike, take advantage of the amazing capabilities of short travel trail bikes.
