Hey everyone. I thought I would once again give my impression on my latest tires that I have gone through on my Rose Blend.

This time, it has been the Schwalbe G-One Overland in 40-622 and the 365 all season/commuting compound. I have used them on the same, now "old gen" Rose G30 alloy wheels I also have on my other gravel bike.

For context, I have switched from the Terra Trail ShielWall, also in 40-622.

The entire time I have run thes G-Ones, they were tubeless with MucOff milk.

Usecase was a lot of commuting, training and some long tours. I would say roughly 70-80% tarmac, the rest varying severity and grit of gravel, some light trails and such.

Overall I can say, that I have been extremely happy with them for my use case.
The rear tire is now beyond bald, but the front easily has another few 1000km in it. So I only switched to a new rear tire.

Following the life of the tire, mounting was pretty tight. Doable without a lever if you have some practice, but not trivial. It seated without a hitch within pressure spec with a handpump. They started at not quite 40mm wide without tread and expanded a little bit over time. Now they are close to 42mm.

I ran them at 2.2 bar front and 2.4 bar rear, usually being lazy and only re-pumping the tires at sub 2 bar front, at which point it was very comfy and not feeling too wobbly. But deforming a bit too much for my taste.

Grip was good and predictable, speed was decent too. You could feel the softer compound in the rolling resistance. But I have ridden way worse, especially with not much better if any better traction (looking at you, WTB Raddler). On wet surfaces, tarmac and smoother gravel, the tires were really impressive. No noticeable loss of grip through normal turns. The shoulder knobs do a good job, but need quite the lean angle to actually engage. Where the Terra Trails go into a limit that is controllable but will have them slide a bit, the Overlands felt a bit more constant and predictable, similar to the G-One R that feels very similar through all the angles. When the Overlands slid I already pushed them really far so the margin was not as big, but it took longer to get there.
Where the Overlands suffered more was soft, deep and squishy mud. The Terra Trails would dig through the soft part until finding purchase on the solid bottom layer. Whereas the Overlands will sometimes fill up with mud and keep spinning, making momentum harder.
I also had some frost, ice and snow, what they claim the 365 compound helps with. Grip was fine in fresh snow, slushy snow depended on what was below. No chance on ice, had my only almost crash with the tires on that. You just need spikes for that.

Comfort I feel is hard to compare to the previous tires, since they were Tubed. It was good for a 40mm tire, but not exceptional. Given that they never punctured, I will take that comfort hit from a thicker carcass.

The reflector ring is nice when new, but there is a reason why its not a tested reflector ring like you need for some traffic laws.

Finally, durability. As I said previously, I did run them pretty much exactly 5000km/3100mi. Given the soft compound and that they are 30€-ish market price per wheel, I am happy with that. The front will probably make it a few 1000km more. Though I likely need to pamper it if I want another 5k/ rear tire from it.
Also: Why does the rear tire look like that? Well, after the rear had barely any profile left, I bought the replacement. And since I then had the spare at home, I decided to have some fun and skid "a bit" when it rained, and it rained a lot these last weeks. I am really impressed with how well it worked on the carcass, given I didn't notice and continued skidding for a good bit and went over some horrible fist sized "gravel" on one a recent climb.

All in all, they are extremely good at the compromise they want to be imo. Not the fastest or longest endurance. But predictable grip in all temperatures and weather, both for commuting/bikepacking and gravel. I already bought one again and probably keep using a new set if this one wears out too.

  1. Thanks for the breakdown. I was curious about them but currently going through the gravelking SK. Also wondering what’s the difference from the non-365 version of those.
