Hello, In August, I set out with a bunch of mates to take on the Westfjords Way, a punishingly beautiful 800km cycling route that is about as remote as you can go in Europe on a bike. The film of our adventure is out now: https://youtu.be/JBaqA8QI6PE.

The Westfjords Way is in the northwest corner of Iceland — at the very edge of the Arctic Circle — and combines hot springs, fjords and mountains into one epic route. The roads are about half gravel and half tarmac, and the route was first popularised by adventure photographer Chris Burkard, who posted his tracks on bikepacking.com. It was an amazing journey and I’ve not cycled anywhere quite like it. There are SO many waterfalls, and with hardly any humans or pollution to be seen, you can drink straight from the streams.

If you’re interested in doing something similar, I’ve put together a short guide to our route, including a download of our GPX files: https://oscarboyd.substack.com/p/the-westfjords-way . We used a local guiding company called The Fjord Hub to help organise logistics there, and we also rented our bikes from them. They were fantastic, and I can heartily recommend them!

It is one of the toughest tours I’ve ever been on, in one of the most beautiful places imaginable. It’s one you definitely have to prepare for, but if you’re up for the challenge, an incredibly rewarding cycle route. Cheers!
