Any feedback on how much a "normal" Brompton (not G Line) can perform on tours which might include some gravel roads? How much of a chance of punctures and discomfort? I'm going to pick up my new C Line this Saturday and beside commuting I would love to use it for exploring areas in my region by catching a train and the cycle back or similar situations. 1. Deviantdefective on

I’ve had my C line on gravel roads personally I don’t find it a particularly pleasant experience though it does depend on the type of gravel and how hard packed it is.

  2. Based on the pictures of the trail in the link it’s doable. Might not be that comfortable though. Generally with some of the chunkier gravel you want to lower tyre pressure but you can’t really lower it that much with 16″ wheels without risking a pinch flat. Off road tyres in 16″ are also more limited.

But for casual exploring some light gravel, and city riding most of the time I would stick with 16″.

  3. Check out the Brompton Touring group on Facebook. You’re likely to find a lot more people doing what you’re doing there

  4. I don’t know if “perform” is the right word really.

Smooth trails are fine. Rougher than that (ruts, sand or bigger stones) it’s fun but slow. Contrary to tarmac riding, the Brompton handles offroad far better without a load on the front, plus it’s handy to be able to see the front wheel.

  5. It’s quite possible on gravel – it partly depends on your riding style

We often ride on canal paths which seem to start well near town then descend into mud and stone

(Learn how to fix a puncture – as you are more likely to get one off-road)
