New bike day for me. I stumbled across this Peugeot Nevada for sale nearby; my wife loved the paint job, and I loved the pure oddballness of an old school French ATB – with Sakae “Ovaltech” chainrings, front and rear Sachs drum brakes, (partial) Cro-Mo tubing… and… made in Canada? It got 4 thumbs up from us so we bought it.

If you’ve never heard of this model before, you wouldn’t be alone. This is a Canadian only model, made on license by Velo-Sport. Velo-Sport was a company based out of Quebec that became the official distributor for Peugeot in Canada sometime in the 1970s. In addition to importing some models, they actually ended up making a number of Peugeot-branded cycles domestically in Canada as well (like this example!). Velo-Sport was also spun off as its own brand as well, as attested to by a 90s road bike my friend has.

The bike is French in name only. It appears to have mostly Japanese standards; JIS crankset and what looks like a standard threaded JIS square BB. A nice Sakae stem. No wacky French seat post sizing; just your fairly typical 26.4mm from that period. The most French components are the Sachs hubs and Sachs-Maillard 6 speed freewheel (which I am hoping is English threaded).

Definitely one of the weirder bikes I’ve had the pleasure of riding.

  1. That’s such a gorgeous bike.

My first bike was a hand-me-down Peugeot hybrid from my parents. I rode it for years before it fell apart junior year of college and I didn’t have money to fix it.

What I wouldn’t give to have those stripes on a bike with Japanese parts.
