Just wanted to update everyone that might be interested because it was a strange issue. Turns out the potato chipping of my rear wheel was caused by an internal linear crack around the entirety of the rim. Picture isn’t great but you can see the crack down the right side of the internal rim. Goes around the whole thing.

Won’t be using WTB rims again. Bought a Race Face ARC HD 30 rim and am going to build my own wheel as a replacement.

  1. Just for my curiosity, could you post a video (or a few pictures) of the rim going potato chip like this ? It’s a great opportunity to wrap my head around that.

thanks for the follow up.. it was definitely an unusual scenario creating the “boneless rim” floppiness..

i’d send an email and image to WTB.. they are not a substandard company churning out Temu level crap.

Even though you’ve given up on them, you might get something out of this. At the very least, knowledge that you’ve made them aware of a flaw in their QC process.

  3. Interesting finding! Not the first WTB to end this way. Their higher end rims are better but the basic OEM rims aren’t very durable. The ARC offset 30 will be a nice upgrade.
