Hey everyone,

I'm a regular rider, and I kept finding myself flipping between my radar app, wind speeds, and temp just to see if I had a clear 60-minute window to get out.

I built WhenToRide.com to solve my own problem, but put it up as a free site so anyone can use it. It’s a dead-simple web app that looks at the next 24 hours (or the week ahead) and highlights the "Green Windows"—the best slots for a ride based on your local conditions.

It's totally free, no ads, and no "sign up for my newsletter." I just wanted something clean that worked on my phone.

I’d love to hear your feedback. What other "conditions" do you look for or does the ride score feel unfair? It currently calculates the score using:

  • Temp & "Feels Like" (Heat Index / Wind Chill)
  • Wind Speed (MPH or KPH based on location)
  • Precipitation
  • Dew Point (The "humidity/misery" factor)
  • Air Quality (US data)
  • Day vs. Night
  • Active Weather Advisories

Ride safe!

  1. Cool idea! Can you set your own preferences that affect the “Score” calculations? For example, I don’t mind riding in the rain, esp in summer, but other people would never ride outside if there’s a chance of rain.

  2. This is where I am grateful where I can just open up an app and see if it is still southern California outside, then go out and ride 😂

It would be great to know the prevailing direction of the wind (which I realize is hard to summarize in a single cell), since sometimes I don’t mind the wind too much if I can start riding into it and end riding with it.

Any way to add traffic conditions to your list of times to avoid? As a roadie I try not to ride during rush hour…

    awesome site & great work

  5. Just wondering where you get the weather data from? Unfortunately, today in Melbourne Australia it’s a bit off. Officially we have 1” to 2” of rain as well as severe weather warnings for flash flooding and thunderstorms. I’m definitely not riding. Your app gives the day a 75/100 (fair) and states 0.74” of rain. I otherwise really love it (and have given a bookmark)!

  6. Don’t see a way to donate to your progress and work, maybe I might’ve over looked.

    I would like to support!

This is super cool, I love it! Will definitely be using it!! Another feature I’d use is to look at the past. So for example, I rode my bike yesterday, but I don’t know what the score would have been on your end. It would be useful to see what conditions I was willing to bike in in the past. For reference, I’m in a snow storm currently and the score is 0. Ok, true, it is totally unbikeable today. Other days this week are scored 2-19 and all still say unbikeable. But who knows if yesterday was actually just as bad and I was happily biking. Basically I’m hoping my threshold is lower than yours so I can bike again soon!!

Tested it out and it gave me a score of zero all day, which is fair because it’s currently a blizzard
