These braze-ons were used to mount a simple gear shifter lever of ANY kind. They weren’t used for shifting, rather the cable was attached to a dynamo close to your bottom bracket and you could en- or disengage the dynamo at your convenience.
Typical dynamo brand was Sanyo, model “Dynapower”.
They work surprisingly well even to this day. Have been travelling with one of these for years now.
