just apply some grease on it, and install it back. there are the plastic cover on the bearing of bottom bracket, no way can damage the crank axle.

Can you measure it? If not feel for wear if there is a slight ridge.
Putting grease on will hide it temporarily but if it’s worn it’s worn.

  3. 100% normal. No indents or deep scratches. Thats typical since things are just rubbing but not causing stiffness or burs or anything

What you want to do while the crank is out is to check the BB bearings. Place your finger on tghe inside of the bearing and press down while rotating it. It if you can feel the bearings then change them out.

  5. It doesn’t look too bad but keep an eye on it.

Is there any noticable lip or is it just a bit smoother.

The spindle should not be turning inside the inner bearing race of the bottom bracket but sometimes there is a bit of movement, could have been a worn bottom bracket in the past that has been replaced or just the bearing slighly out of allignment.

Give it a clean, make sure there is no grease or libricant on the inside of the bearing race or the spindle that could be helping it spin. Best thing to use if you’re worried about it getting stuck is some anti-sieze, it protect the surfaces with out lubricating.

Check the BB moves freely, If its a screw in type shimano BB then those things are as cheap as chips, less than £20 for an Ultegra one in the UK right now, I’d pop a new one in while you have the crank out.
