Getting your German driver’s license costs between €3,400 and €4,500 today 😱 — but that’s about to change!
Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder has announced major reforms coming in 2026 that will make learning to drive cheaper, faster, and more flexible.
Here’s what’s changing 👇
1️⃣ Online theory lessons — no more mandatory classroom hours!
2️⃣ Driving simulators will replace many expensive on-road sessions.
3️⃣ Theory exam cut from 1,100 ➡️ 750 questions — less stress, same safety.
4️⃣ Practical test time reduced from 55 ➡️ 25 minutes.
5️⃣ Driving schools must show pass rates for full transparency.
Patrick Schnieder says:
👉 “We want a modern, safe, and affordable driver training system for everyone.”
💡 The reform is expected by early 2026, saving learners hundreds of euros and making driver’s licenses more accessible than ever.
💭 Would you prefer learning to drive online and with simulators?

Till when can we expect it to come into effect?
I have old type driving licence (hologram sticker) from india. I didn't get it converted to the new smart chip card. But my card is still valid and expires in 2038 only. Can i use this card for licence conversion(Umschreibung) or do they ask for the latest smart chip card?
Hello Vanakkam, thanks for the valuable info. Do you have any update on this news like when exactly will it be in force? As of today, I have talked with several driving school, but they cannot say anything. Everything is the same as last year.
