I recently decided to try fixing my ebike on my own.

So far i have changed the chain and cassette.

But now there seeems to be trouble on the contact point between chain and motor sprocket.

It seems the chain has a hard time fitting on the gear teeth.

When turning, the chain locks in place on each gear tooth with a "Click".

Find video attached that shows this behavior.

I'm not quite sure what the cause of this is and how to fix.

My first guess was a worn out motor sprocket. But in the video the teeth still look fine. No rounded edges and stuff.

My second guess was that the chain may be too short. As this behavior happens only in first gear (Biggest sprocket). But when changing the chain I made sure the new chain has the same number of chain links as the old chain.

What's happening here? Your help is very much appreciated!

New chain doesn't like my sprocket

  1. It could be a few things. My guess is:

    – incorrect chain (this is my guess)
    – far too much tension on the chain
    – Cassette teeth are bad but you’ve just replaced them so unlikely
    – I need of a good clean – may help but wouldn’t cause it to be this bad.

Have you converted this into a single speed? I’m sure it must be because the chain doesn’t match the cassette.

Wait: you changed the chain and cassette but NOT the motor sprocket? And the bike has a rear derailleur?

In that case forget all comments about chain tension, your derailleur is doing that for you. Those comments only apply to to setups where you don’t have a spring loaded chain tensioner (aka derailleur).

New chain on old chainring/cassette/sprocket will always be a little rough. Especially because it’s hard to see wear on chainrings until they are really worn down. It is normal for a new chain to feel rough on an already used sprocket/chainring/etc, even if that part is not yet worn done. Ride it around for a while, it should get better. If it bothers you a lot, replace sprocket too.

  3. New parts on old chainring. Give it some time sand it will find it home. Is it skipping or jumping off the front chainring? If so, replace,if not ride for a bit and see if it persists. It also may be louder then usualy due to new chain/old chainring
