After taking care of some rusty parts fresh out of the box, I finally got my bike all put together, and ready to ride…only made it about 3 minutes before I heard that dreaded twang of the spokes. 😩 Now the rear rim is completely out of true.

I didn’t even get a chance to try anything; I was just trying to get familiar with a 20” and rebuild my stability and confidence. All it took was a few pedals and it’s locked up.

Sucks that the first ride was this short and ended with me walking the bike home…but I guess that’s part of the journey.

  1. That sucks man. But, are you sure it’s the spokes? Are you sure the wheel hasn’t slipped forward in the dropouts? If it’s slipped forward the likelihood is with a tyre that wide it’s locked up on the brake arms.

If it really is the spokes and they have failed it would be worth contacting the retailer as they should most definitely put up with just riding along.

Sometimes that twang of the spokes is them seating in, it’s not a failure. If you see broken spokes or the rim shifts out of true, then it’s a problem…spokes popping and pinging is actually normal when a rim is newly laced or trued.
