The Giant has tiagra and the Specialized has shimano 105s. Just getting into the sport and finding it difficult to know which is better. Thanks in advance.

Prices? In general the Defy with the full carbon frame would be my first choice. The carbon seat stays in the Allez were a short lived feature of bikes. They can come loose. With larger frames that means more flexing which can break the glue joint.
